Healthy Feet

Our feet make up 25% of the bones in our body. They hold us up and they keep our body aligned. If our feet function incorrectly it will directly affect the general well being of the rest of our body, including our ankles, knees, hips, back and neck.

Starting at infancy right through to adulthood it is so important that we are good to our feet.

Infant’s feet are made up primarily of cartilage, with the bones constantly growing and developing. That is why you will notice that most infant’s feet are “chubby”; the fat is there to insulate and protect the continually developing bones. Poor footwear can cause lasting damage to growing feet.

Proper Fit
There are so many different types of footwear available. Each individual shoe offers different features and benefits. You could be in the most well made, very supportive shoe but if that shoe doesn’t fit properly you will not benefit from any of the support.

When fitting for a new shoe it is important that the entire foot is taken into consideration. Meaning not only the length and width of the foot, but the circumference of the foot as well. It is essential to the development of your child’s healthy feet that they are in a shoe that fits properly. Just like adults, every child’s foot is different.

Not only are children’s feet different, but each child also develops their own unique walking pattern or gait. This walking pattern will be worked into their shoes over time. This is a main reason that shoes should not be passed down from one child to the next: The next person to wear that same shoe will be forced to walk the same way because of that shoes wear pattern.
